Top 7 Ways on How to Make Range Hood Quiet

If you haven’t invested in a quality quiet range hood, then I will be showing you different ways on how to make range hood quiet.

Noise is a huge issue for many people. Whether it be from your dishwasher, the clothes washer or even the range hood, noise can become very distracting and annoying.

In this blog post, I will show you how to make your range hood as quiet as possible so that cooking becomes less of a chore and more pleasurable.

Why Is My Range Hood So Loud?

It could be that your old, clunky unit is just too loud for comfort or it might be something else altogether related to installation.

To figure out the cause of the problem, take a look at these common culprits.

Grease on Range Hood Fan Blade

Grease buildup is one of the leading causes for noisy range hoods because it contributes to clattering noises during high-heat cooking.

This happens because liquids evaporate much faster than solids under heat which forces liquid fats outwards towards where air enters the system via fans.

So, although they might look clean, grease particles are still present on fan blades and will gradually accumulate.

Faulty Insulation

Range hood insulation protects the metal framework inside which carries air through vents to remove smoke and heat.

If this protection has been damaged or removed then all sound will travel into living spaces.

This can happen when you try to clean off grease with chemicals such as ammonia-based cleaners.

These substances often contain strong vapors that can travel through the ductwork and damage insulation.

To avoid such damages, I highly recommend you use a non-abrasive range hood cleaner such as Homestar Range Hood Filter Cleaner.

Damaged Or Missing Insulation Around Your Kitchen Appliances

Same as above, but in this case it’s kitchen appliances.

If you have a dishwasher with an exterior vent (especially if not connected to your range hood), then any noise from inside will be amplified by up to ten times when traveling into living spaces.

Excess Noise at The Vent

The last culprit is any excessive noise coming from range hood vents themselves.

Poorly installed or damaged ductwork can lead to excess air rushing through a system which creates louder sounds than normal with just lower levels of airflow.

This also increases wear-and-tear, as fans need to work harder for less result.

It’s important not only that the exhaust grill be tightly sealed but also that it doesn’t have too many bends.

Too many bends in the metal framework create turbulence that amplifies the sound waves.

Top 7 Ways on How to Make Range Hood Quiet

There are a variety of ways to reduce the noise from a range hood.

You can use products that help prevent or absorb sound, such as acoustic foam panels and decoupling materials.

Some newer models also include extra insulation around the duct work for greater attenuation.

Check with your dealer to find out which items they offer in their lineup before you make a purchase decision.

1. Run The Range Hood at Lower Speeds

Run the range hood at lower speed and use a quality grease filter to absorb more of cooking odors and particles.

You should try running the range hood at lower speed, which is usually no higher than 600 rpm’s (revolutions per minute).

If this does not help sufficiently reduce noise levels for you, it may be beneficial to install a “quality” grease filter.

The grease filter will help absorb some of those cooking odors and particles before they are expelled onto the ceiling or out into your kitchen space.

Running fans at lower speeds will reduce the spinning blades speeds subsequently reducing the noise levels produced by the range hood.

2. Keep the Grease Filters Clean

Grease Filters – A grease filter can capture up to 90% of cooking odors and particles before they are expelled into your kitchen space or out through the top vent of your range hood.

Cleaning these filters should only take a few seconds every couple week at most so it is not as laborious to maintain them as you may think.

3. Install A Duct Damper and Increase the Size of Your Ductwork

A duct damper is an additional device that can be installed on the end of your vent pipe to reduce noise from turbulent air flow and may or may not need electricity.

Additionally, you should use flexible pipes rather than rigid pipes.

Flexible pipes are less likely to vibrate, transferring more sound than metal or concrete piping material which transfer much lesser vibrations in comparison.

And lastly if your ductwork is too small for the range hood, it may over-extend. This will cause a higher level of noise emissions and more energy usage.

4. Get A Range Hood That Compatible with An Inline Blower

An inline blower is installed inside the ductwork in your home and not inside the range hood.

Therefore, the inline blower is located further from the range hood compared to a local blower that is installed inside the range hood.
