A soundproof cardboard box is an enclosure that is designed to reduce the transmission of noise. This can be accomplished through the use of materials that absorb or reflect sound, or by creating a seal between the inside and outside of the box. Soundproof boxes are often used to contain noisy equipment, such as generators, pumps, and HVAC units, in order to minimize the noise that they emit.
Building a soundproof box is a great way to reduce noise in your home or office. If you’re looking to build a soundproof box, there are a few things you’ll need to take into account. First, you’ll need to choose the right materials. Soundproofing foam or mass loaded vinyl are both great choices for absorbing sound. Additionally, if you’re building a soundproof box for tools like a generator, you ought to take into consideration things like ventilation.
What is Soundproof Baffle Box?
A soundproof cardboard box is a container made of cardboard material that is designed to reduce or block the transmission of sound. It is typically constructed using layers of sound-absorbing or sound-blocking materials, combined with the insulating properties of cardboard. The purpose of a soundproof cardboard box is to provide a portable and cost-effective solution for reducing noise or creating a quieter environment.
The construction of a soundproof cardboard box can vary depending on its intended use and the level of sound reduction required. Some common features may include:
- Multiple layers: The box may consist of several layers of cardboard or other sound-absorbing materials such as foam, acoustic panels, or specialized soundproofing materials. These layers help to trap and absorb sound waves, preventing them from escaping or entering the box.
- Sealing: The box may have reinforced edges or seals to prevent sound leakage through gaps or openings. This can be achieved through the use of adhesive tapes, rubber gaskets, or other sealing mechanisms.
- Interior lining: The inside of the box may be lined with sound-absorbing materials to further enhance its soundproofing capabilities. These materials can include foam padding, acoustic fabric, or specialized soundproofing liners.
- Design considerations: The box may be constructed with features that minimize vibrations or resonance, such as internal bracing or structural reinforcements. These design elements help to reduce the transmission of sound through the box itself.
How to Build a Soundproof Box
Creating a completely soundproof cardboard box can be challenging, as cardboard is not inherently designed for sound insulation. However, you can take certain steps to minimize sound transmission and reduce noise to some extent. Here’s a general guide on how you can make a sound-reducing cardboard box:
Materials you’ll need:
- Sturdy cardboard box
- Acoustic foam panels or sound-absorbing material
- Mass-loaded vinyl (MLV) or soundproofing mats
- Adhesive spray or glue
- Utility knife or scissors
- Duct tape or similar sealing tape
Purchase the Cardboard Box
Purchase a cardboard box that is bigger than the item you need to soundproof. If you are unsure of the size, get a box that is slightly larger.
You can get a cardboard box online or from a local store. However, if you can find the exact match size you’re looking for, I would highly recommend you get one that’s closest size to your desired one.
I purchased my box from a U-Haul dealer. It’s a sturdy design guarantees durability for years to come. However, if you can’t find a U-dealer near you, I would highly recommend you checkout from other online stores such as EBay or amazon.
Build a the Cardboard Instead
Take the Measurements of the appliance you need to soundproof. You will need these dimensions to build your cardboard box.
Building the frame of the soundproofing box is simple. Just cut 4 pieces of cardboard that will serve as the walls of your box. Make sure that the measurements are exact so that the appliance will fit snugly inside.
Next, take 2 pieces of cardboard and cut them into smaller strips. These will be used as support for the frame of the box. Attach the strips to 2 opposite sides of the frame using duct tape or hot glue.
To further reinforce the frame, you can add an extra layer of cardboard on sides of the cardboard frame. Once again, use duct tape or hot glue to attach this layer to the frame.
Now it’s time to soundproof the box. You can do this by lining the inside of the box with foam insulation or dynamat as explained below.
Use Styrofoam Adhesive
Use Styrofoam Adhesive to stick the foam to the cardboard box. You can also use other adhesives like hot glue, but we find that the Styrofoam adhesive works best.
Make sure to apply the glue to all the sides of the cardboard box, as well as the bottom and top. You want there to be no gaps in the foam coverage so that sound cannot escape.
It’s also a good idea to add an extra layer of protection by covering the outside of the cardboard box with another layer of material. This could be another sheet of cardboard, or even a towel or blanket.
Line with Acoustic Foam
To soundproof your cardboard box, you will need to line it with soundproofing material. You can use any type of soundproofing material that you like, but I recommend using acoustic foam or felt.
Acoustic foam is specifically designed to absorb sound, so it will be the most effective at reducing the noise coming from your box. Felt is also a good option for sound reduction, and it is cheaper than acoustic foam.
Once you have chosen your soundproofing material, cut it into pieces that will fit snugly inside your box. Make sure that there are no gaps between the pieces of material, as this will reduce the effectiveness of the soundproofing. Once your box is lined with material, close it up and enjoy the quiet.
Use Dynamat for Serious Soundproofing
Dynamat is one of the best sound deadening materials on the market, and it’s definitely worth the price. You can use Dynamat as an alternative to the acoustic foam.
I’ve used it in my own car and can attest to its effectiveness. If you’re serious about improving the sound quality of your car, Dynamat is the way to go.
If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, I recommend Noico mat. It’s not as effective as Dynamat, but it’s much cheaper and will still make a noticeable difference.
Another option is to build two boxes – one slightly larger than the other. Line the smaller box with your chosen material, then place it inside the larger one. This will create an air pocket between the two boxes, which will help to reduce noise.

Decorate by Painting
Decorate the box by painting it or wrapping it in fabric. This will help to improve the look of the box and make it more appealing to the eye.
For even better sound reduction, I would highly advise you to use soundproofing paint. Soundproof paint is a type of paint that contains sound-dampening materials.
These materials help to reduce the amount of noise that is able to pass through walls and ceilings, making them ideal for use in areas where sound pollution is a problem.
Soundproof paints are available in a variety of colors and can be applied just like regular paint, making them an easy and convenient way to improve the soundproofing of a room.
Important Notes to Consider when Building Cardboard Box
First, make sure the ventilation holes are not too big. The larger the hole, the more sound will be able to pass through it. If you can, try to make the holes smaller.
Second, use a material that will not absorb sound. Some materials that work well for this are foam or other soft materials.
Third, try to seal the edges of the holes. This will help to reduce the amount of sound that escapes through them.
Fourth, if possible, add another layer of cardboard on top of the first layer. This will help to further reduce the amount of sound that escapes through the holes.
Make sure that all four sides of your box are covered with cardboard so that no sound can escape.
